Another Half Of Me - Chapter 3

Tania entered the hospital in hurry trying her best to reach Dr Suresh’s cabin as fast as she can. She entered the room as Dr Suresh was starting with the patient briefing.

“Patient transfer from St Angelo’s, and I want you, Dr Tania, to take care of it,” Dr Suresh said handing her the papers.

Sighing Tania grabbed the papers and went to her room. Sitting down on her chair, she flicked through the papers.

No patient name. That’s strange, thought Tania, only a code, No. 22.

Okay, it’s now or never, let’s check the case history.

Tania put down the papers with a heavy heart after 1 hour. If the written stuff was true, then she had a very tough case in her hand. It was time for the visit. Summoning the nurse, she briskly walked towards the patient’s room.

Sitting on the wheelchair, there she was, staring in space blankly. As Tania stood in front of her and looked at her smilingly, she felt a sudden cold wave numbing her veins. It felt as if she was staring through Tania. There was no response when Tania waved her hand in front of her eyes.

The staff transferred her to the bed. Still no reaction: no body movement at all. She lay on that bed just like a bag of vegetables.

Feeling a little numbed inside, Tania placed her hand on the patient’s forehead. Hot as burning coals. “Have you guys checked her temperature?” she asked the staff.

“Yes, doctor, we have. It’s normal,” the nurse replied.

“Then, how come her forehead is burning. Leave, I’ll check it again. And, ask Dr Bhaskar to get ready for all the tests. I need the reports asap,” she ordered the nurse.

Tania was still staring the test results in front of her. Very low BP. Low hemoglobin. Looking from the medical point of view, the patient should be dead by now. But she had survived in this condition for the last 5 years. Shaking her head, she looked up. Dr Suresh was standing in the doorway looking at her.

“I wanted you to find all this on your own. She is very strange case. Mentally deranged, physically completely drained, but still alive. St Angelo transferred the case as they cannot handle her antics at night. Plus they know she will not survive long.”

Tania looked at him and smiled. “Who are we to decide when she will die? If her urge to live is strong, then He can also not take her life.”

Boom. Her ears vibrated heavily with that sound. She could feel blood trickling down her legs. Trying to move, she put her hand on the stomach and felt blood oozing out from the glass piece sticking inside her. The windows shattered with another boom and she felt the burning chards of rubber stick to her skin. She struggled to open the door by her side, but somehow it did not budge. Boom. The raging fire engulfed what was left of her.
