Mr Gupta – The Sweet Shop Owner

Guptaji sat on his chair with the cashbox outside his sweet shop. Eating a jalebi, he shouted instructions to his staff to serve people quickly with the food. As I stood near the stall, I heard him speak in his pure UP accent. Looking at his face, I realized that age had started to show on his face in the form of wrinkles. His brown eyes twinkled with excitement whenever he saw money.

Short and little stout, Guptaji had never worn anything else other than a white safari suit. As he talked in hushed tones to the other shop keepers, his hands kept making waves in the air. Not able to capture what he was saying, I somehow understood he was agitated about something. As he settled down again, I saw him looking forlorn for some reason. Smiling amiably, he took the money from me and was again back to his antics.
